a very Nola fleur-de-lis ice sculpture design

As I mentioned in an earlier entry, the fleur-de-lis is a very popular design down around New Orleans. It’s the result of New Orleans’ unusual relationship to French culture (at least for American cities); New Orleans’ use of the fleur de lis reflects this. The photo above shows a recent sculpture at a wedding. Frequently, I add the couple’s names or monogram to the base to make it more personal. (See the picture at the bottom.)

This fleur-de-lis ice sculpture design follows my “core design” concept in which smaller pieces are tacked onto a heavier & larger core structure. The smaller pieces should be welded (using aluminum plate) onto the larger. It’s better to do the welding relatively early while carving. Take a look at the red lines on the template image. These lines indicate where you should leave extra ice prior to and during the welding. You will get a better weld and you will protect these delicate sections from breakage if you do this. Once the weld has frozen, these sections can be cut away and smoothed.

in this template diagram for my fleur-de-lis ice sculpture, the red lines indicate ice that you might want to leave in place until the welding is done, since it protects vulnerable corners.

This carving can be cut from a full thickness block, but it works even better using just a four to five inch thick slab. In this case, however, you have to add a base piece for stability. So in addition to the slab, you would need a 20”x10”x4” piece also.

You can see from the photos that the welds on the sides of the sculpture are not particularly visible when properly done. Most people never notice them at the event. I weld them using the method for welding ice with aluminum plate. With practice, it’s not even necessary to turn the sculpture on its side to weld each section on. It can be done with the fleur-de-lis standing as it would on display.
