a silently swooping owl ice sculpture design
This owl ice sculpture design resulted from a request for a high school prom. The school’s mascot was an owl and was depicted swooping through the air in the artwork they gave me. I did redraw the owl so that it works better in ice though.
In order to maximize the size of the owl, you cut base pieces from beneath the wings and add to the bottom of the sculpture. (Or, you might want to cut a more substantial base from another piece of ice.)
Make sure that the piece is very stable and that there is plenty of thickness in the owl’s tail and the rest of the base ice to support the main part of the sculpture.
After the base pieces have been attached, carving on the main part can begin. Early on, you should block out ice for the talons, as the talons are extended from the very front of the sculpture. The base of this design is very nondescript, but it could be made to look like rocks, or you could add ice to make it into branches, clouds, or anything that you’d like.
Later down the line, my owl ice sculpture will probably get a redesign, especially if I pair it with a typical sitting owl and put them in a new Halloween design ebook. The next time I sculpt this piece, I definitely want to get better pics of it outside the freezer and I’ll make sure I don’t screw up his eyes again 🤦♂️
