with the help of a Brice bubble bit, the “beads” look more like beads.

my feathered Mardi Gras mask ice sculpture design

*updated 5/18/23 when I added it to iss

Even though Mardi Gras has passed and Ash Wednesday is here, I thought I’d add one more Mardi Gras design: my feathered Mardi Gras mask ice sculpture design. I’ve posted photos of this piece before, but not the design. This piece is similar to but smaller than the first mask design that was added and is carved from a half block slab of ice (40”x20”,4-5” thick)

The color is added just like snowfill, only the glitter is added from the back of the sculpture and then snow is packed over the color while the piece is lying down. Take special care not to push the glitter around with the snow, otherwise the snow will push the glitter out of the way and be visible from the front.

this shows what the added glitter looks like from the front for my feathered Mardi Gras mask ice sculpture design.

Note: I’m trying to find good biodegradable glitter for these sculptures so that I’m not contributing to the microplastics problem with a melting sculpture.

in the template above, the design is reversed and indicates the spots where color can be added from the back of the sculpture. A lot of the front side detail has been removed for clarity.

how would it work on a CNC machine?

Hopefully, I’ll get to try this design on my CNC soon. Because I think it would work very well. I’d have to work out how to engrave both sides accurately, but other than that, I doubt there would be many challenges. As soon as I get a chance to run this design on my CNC, I’ll post the results here.
