frosty logo snowflake ice sculpture design

logo snowflake ice sculpture with the Royal Sonesta Hotel logo

this logo snowflake ice sculpture features the Royal Sonesta Hotel logo, which is a French Quarter hotel right on Bourbon St. Coincidentally, it’s also where my current freezer came from. My freezer has HISTORY, lol!

In an effort to avoid a weld line running right through the center of a large snowflake, and therefore the logo, I designed this logo snowflake ice sculpture. When using a standard dimension ice block, the two side welds get lost in the snowflake detailing and aren’t as noticeable. Use the aluminum welding technique so that your welds are strong and clean.

Taking it even further to eliminate weld lines, we’ve also even carved this piece out of a larger “monster” block, but we cut out the center (see the bottom drawing) and goofed on the supports, so the piece broke and never made it to an event 😩

I’ve found it’s a bit easier if you leave the two welded pieces relatively uncut until after the welds are secure. (That’s what the dotted lines are for those pieces on the template.) If you cut them out completely before welding, then you have twice as many welds to do. Once they’re securely welded to the center structure, then it’s fairly easy to cut them out completely.

in hindsight, I’d probably make the base a little bigger. It’s certainly wide enough, but I usually like bases that are about 19-20″ x ~12″ so that the sculpture is very stable and very unlikely to tip forward or backward as the base melts.

different design approaches

Let’s see, different variations for a logo snowflake ice sculpture…🤔 Yeah, you only have about a billion different options. At some later date, I’l try to add a few variations. If you’d like to try to come up with your own, you can start with these awesome snowflake photos.

Also, it would be pretty easy to turn this snowflake ice sculpture into an ice luge: funnel at the upper left, tube down through the center, luge exits on the lower right.

how would it work on a CNC machine?

This logo snowflake ice sculpture design is perfectly suited for my CNC machine. One thing I haven’t gotten around to yet is using my V-bits on my CNC. But this design would be a great opportunity for that and I’m really looking forward to the holidays when I’ll likely get a chance.
