you MIGHT have seen a 360˚ view pic of this stork and baby ice sculpture. As of this update, it’s on the welcome page. I’d add it here, but the 360˚ plug-in doesn’t function perfectly in the secrets posts. So I have to find another way later.

stork and baby ice sculpture: is it pink or blue?!
This ice sculpture design depicts a Vlasic pickle-style stork holding a baby bundle in his beak. This design was inspired by a sculpture by Dean Carlson and you can see an example of it on his gallery page, at least as soon as I get around to restoring it 😬 This design also has some similarities to a much earlier design, “Special delivery,” also on this site. One of the main features this designs shares with the Carlson design is the linking of the baby bundle to the body of the stork, making it possible for the ice stork’s neck to support the otherwise too heavy bundle.
The baby’s head is welded on and the stork is tilted to make it possible to fit a larger sculpture in the block. You could also make the piece smaller, but the baby/bundle juncture is an ideal spot for an easy, hidden weld. Just make sure that you weld it right on the edge of the bundle; you don’t want there to be a seam in the baby’s head!
Before carving this piece, find out if it will be displayed against a wall or in the round. If it will be against a wall, only give the sculpture an eye on the displayed side as the snowfilled cartoonish eye is highly visible. A backside eye, similarly carved and visible through the clear ice, will detract from the main view. If the sculpture will be displayed in the round, then there’s not much you can do about it.
Normally, a photo of the piece is featured instead of buried at the back of the article, but the sculpture placement in front of a window made it tough to get a good photo. Fortunately, I later got a picture of this design in the freezer (see at top and below). Also, the design could be refined and cleaned up some, but the photo above demonstrates how well it worked at this baby shower. In this case, the sculpture was lit blue as they were expecting a boy.
could be great for gender reveals!
make sure to light your stork and baby ice sculpture appropriately if they know if the baby will be a boy or a girl. (The stork on the left is a Photoshop addition; the lighting was changed and the sculpture is a mirror image)
One trend that started to show up around the time I designed this piece was gender reveals. Over time, they’ve gotten crazier and crazier! Sadly, there’s nothing involving an ice sculpture in that article. But you could easily do it with pink or blue lighting for a stork and baby ice sculpture. Push a button to turn the lights on and everyone knows!
Or, it could be more elaborate; maybe someone uses a small hammer (VERY small 😱) to break some white ice away from the front of “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” with the right color lettering. Why this isn’t a thing yet is puzzling to me 🤷♂️
