an old-looking candle ice sculpture design

This old-style candle holder in my candle ice sculpture design is associated with a traditional Christmas, so it works well as a holiday ice sculpture. If this kind of candle holder and sleeping caps, along with the characters Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim, are unfamiliar to you, then check out this page about Charles Dickens and his famous story. A Christmas Carol still to this day has a strong influence how many think about the holidays, even though it’s been close to two centuries since it was written 😮

some sculpting tips

With this candle ice sculpture design, the “melted” wax on the candle offers an interesting opportunity for white-on-ice contrast. Rather than sculpting the melted wax, make snow and slush from the large quantities of extra ice that this piece generates, and pack it around the top of the candle so that it looks like the melted wax. Then let it freeze, and do some finishing sculpting on the frozen slush if necessary.

Also, there is a cool opportunity for a neat color detail here. Maybe I can get more into this later, but you could cut the flame portion of the sculpture off, split it and freeze some flamey orange-yellow transparencies inside. Then you’d freeze it back in place and shape it a little. Something like Rudolph’s red nose or the Easter Bunny’s color egg. (I think I’ll have to link to the Bunny design later; oops.) Anyway, something to consider.

Finally, if you have trouble with the finger loop on the back of the sculpture, you can always carve it separately and then weld it to the main piece. Happy holidays!
