in a warm environment, a Santa face ice sculpture like this won’t last too long. Sculpted this way, the details won’t be as durable as if they were snowfill engraved. Thankfully, you probably won’t use this anytime other than December!
where is my Santa face ice sculpture design?
I searched all over my old website files for a post about a Santa face ice sculpture design. Guess what I got?
NOTHING. That is, except for a mention and pics in a roundup of holiday sculpture designs. (If you go to the roundup, realize that I MAY not have cleaned it up just yet.)
Apparently, I was just about to add a post when I stopped working on ice carving secrets, pretty much for good. So this is the first post that focuses on this design. It’s kinda a “new” design then too π The date on the post comes from when it looks like I was planning to post it, years ago.
when I get a chance, I’m going to redraw this design. I like the hair and beard details, but I’m not happy with Santa’s eyes. He could also be more jolly, definitely! Fortunately, it’s just a template and I did a little better with the actual sculpture. (Although that too could use a little improvement!)
different design approaches
Looking at the sculpture in the picture, you can see that the sculpture isn’t very deep; it’s sculpted out of a block that’s only 4-5″ thick. Another approach would be to use a full ice block (8-12″ thick) and add a lot more depth (and longevity) to Santa’s facial features.
Another possibility would be to simply snowfill engrave this piece. You could get some excellent contrast with Santa’s white beard/mustache and hat fur against the other clear ice features.
There are other possibilities of course, and maybe I can talk about those later. (hopefully with examples too!)
how would it work on a CNC machine?
I’m looking forward to adding my Santa face ice sculpture design to my CNC catalog, for sure. When I do, I’ll show you what I did and didn’t change here.
