brand new waving Easter bunny ice sculpture!

updated significantly 4/10/23

I literally just finished my waving Easter bunny ice sculpture design and I used it a couple times already for Easter brunch. So it’s definitely brand new! It is, however, based on a sculpture that I tried years ago and didn’t really like. I thought I could do better though, so I gave it another shot.

I ran it on the CNC machine and I got lots of pics. Check them out below and you can get a better idea of how I made this sculpture.

some notes on my approach

I usually do backside engravings for my CNC pieces, but I went with a front side engraving on this one. It just felt like it would work a little better in this case.

Also, you might recognize the font that I’m using. Max Zuleta of Art Below Zero has really popularized this font; it’s called Harrington. Despite its decorative nature, it’s surprisingly useful for a wide variety of sculpture types. I’ve used it for weddings, of course. But its style seems to work in a lot of places. No wonder Max uses it!

here, I’m running my waving Easter bunny ice sculpture on CNC machine. Only the outline and some large details are done so far. I’m finished with the .5 inch diameter bit and have moved on to the .25 inch bit. After that comes the .125 inch bit for all the fine details on the bunny and the “Happy Easter!” wording in the ribbon.

at this point, my waving Easter bunny ice sculpture has finished engraving on the CNC. I now have to finish freezing in the snow and then I can release the sculpture from the surrounding ice and make it a sculpture.

ALMOST done with my waving Easter bunny ice sculpture! I’ve cut the outline free and attached it to a base. Basically now, it just needs a little clean up.

and here we are; my waving Easter bunny ice sculpture has gone to a new home, and it’s a nice one! He’ll stay in the freezer for a day or so and then it’s showtime and his last hurrah at Easter brunch!

old waving Easter bunny ice sculpture design

by the way, this is my OLD waving Easter bunny ice sculpture, the one I didn’t like. Partly, I don’t like the background, but there’s a lot not to like.

trying to stay away from creepy

I’ve talked about it before, but it’s really easy to accidentally make an Easter bunny look super creepy. People you would think should know better do it all the time! I spent a little extra time on this design then, making sure that he looks goofy and happy rather than scary 😱

In hindsight though, I’m not totally sure I made him 100% creepy free :/ I also think his smile looks a little insincere. So I’m going to try to adjust his expression a bit for next Easter. I’ll be looking at his eyes, his eyebrows, and his mouth. It’s hard to look objectively at your own artwork, so I’ll step away from it for a while and then try the adjustments.
