Shenhu 6th International Ice Sculpture Masters
Here are some pics from an event that I judged in Nantong, China. I call it the 2023 Nantong Ice Sculpting Championships, but it’s really the Shenhu Ice Sculpture 6th International Ice Sculpture Masters competition (I know, that’s a LOT to say; it’s even worse to type over and over.) The event ended on 4/30/23 and was an 8-10 day event, depending on how you calculate it. Honestly, I don’t currently know how many blocks each team got (I know I SHOULD know!), but I’ll find out later.
the results and stuff
First place went to a Chinese team for their sculpture “Illusion.” Pretty awesome sculpture that had a light frosting of snow that really helped set it apart and made it more visually striking! Second place went to a Mongolian team for “Exquisite.” It was well named and had an amazing 3D composition. Finally, Sam Girault from France took third place for “Time of Life.” This was a huge sculpture and it was pretty insane that he did it mostly by himself. He had a helper for short periods, but his teammate had a visa issue and couldn’t make it. Congrats to the winners!
The event was held at the Sendi Snow Park in Nantong, China. I posted another gallery just concerned with the Snow Park, since there was a lot of ice/snow stuff besides the competition. The slides were fun!
Finally, please forgive me for not having all the competitors names. This is a toughie sometimes, since many of the competitors names at international events don’t work well in English. I have to track down English equivalents if I can even easily get my hands on their names to begin with!
Here, you’ll notice that none of the sculptures have placards like you see at some competitions. To some degree, the organizers withheld competitor names to discourage favoritism, but I’m not sure why placards weren’t produced for after judging. At any rate, as judges, we aren’t really supposed to hang out with the competitors and compiling a list of the teams wasn’t a high priority after the event. But I’m going to try to put that info together since it’s kind of lame to not have it!
boring details that nobody reads
I’m not really happy with how the gallery thumbnails look; they’re pretty blurry. (I’m half-heartedly looking at other gallery options to fix this.) But the full-size images look pretty good. If you can, look at them full size with what I think is called the lightbox look. I had to work on some of the images a bit to make them easier to see. In some cases, the light blue walls and cluttered backgrounds at the Snow Park were problematic. If I can make this gallery (and others on the site) better later on, then I will. Thanks!
