double detailing ice sculptures to make them look awesome longer

an ice sculpture like this mermaid has lots of delicate detail. To help the detail stay around a little longer, you can “double detail” your pieces.

One effective method of creating long lasting detail is by double detailing ice sculptures. Use a larger tool for the first cuts and then follow the original cuts with a smaller tool that makes a smaller channel. For example, use a v-bit chisel or a die grinder with a cone endmill or v-bit and then follow with a small straight bit (or an ice needle) on a Dremel tool.

A cross-section of this cut would look like a “Y” with the larger bit cutting the top “V” portion and the Dremel cutting the deeper stem of the “Y.” (See the diagram below.) As long as the Dremel section is not clogged with snow or slush, you create long lasting detail that looks good too.

If I recall correctly, this little ice sculpting tidbit was courtesy of Dean Carlson
