my partly finished unicorn “bust”, from 2005, still pretty snowy
updated and tweaked a bit 3/26/24 when restored to the site. (But not much, since I’m lazy and already have way too much to do.) This post used to be simply titled “death of a unicorn,” and I wouldn’t be surprised if I refer to it that way elsewhere in the posts. However, seo and other considerations led me to retitle it in a more click-baity way 😜
a unicorn coincidence
Nothing terribly informative in this entry, just a coincidence that I only recently realized. (Back when I first posted this, I mean.)
As a child, I remember hearing the story that the unicorns are gone because they wouldn’t/couldn’t get on the Ark with Noah and they perished in the great flood. When New Orleans had its own version of the biblical flood in 2005, the exact same thing happened…sort of.
I happened to have a unicorn sculpture (just the head) in my freezer that I was slowly working on. It was intended to be a piece along the lines of my ice dragon, but it wasn’t progressing as well. When the storm took down the power grid in New Orleans, my unicorn (along with my ice dragon) was left to fend for itself in the heat of late August. As far as I know, the waters from Lake Pontchartrain never reached my freezer, so the flooding wasn’t directly responsible for its demise. But it certainly had a lot to do with the extended loss of electricity for my walk-in freezer.
Fortunately, big chunks of ice will last for days in all but the hottest temperatures. Some friends that stayed put my unicorn and dragon, along with other random chunks of ice, to good use and kept their food cold. So in the end, my unicorn proved to be just what it was: a big, pretty ice cube…
links and stuff
This post was one of those ones that happened when I thought of something that only I would care about and decided to share it with the world 🤣🙄 I’d like to think that I’ve stopped doing that, but it’s unlikely 😬
At any rate, surprisingly, there are some links related to this post. The unicorn in the pic led to a new unicorn design years later and you can check that out (as soon as I finish the post). I’m also going to add the design of the dragon I mentioned at some point, but I haven’t done that just yet. But you could see what it looked like in this post. I like it, even still!
You could also find photos and info from this entry on the ice sculpting secrets Instagram account or the facebook page. ice sculpting secrets is also on TikTok, although videos there aren’t really tied to posts as much. You can comment on IG and fb as well as below. And if it won’t LET you comment below, then definitely comment on fb and/or IG. Thanks!
